London has fallen. To its lowest homicide rate on record.

That part never makes the clips. For years tabloids and viral accounts have been assembling a second London: no-go zones, Sharia courts, streets nobody dares walk down. Millions of people who have never set foot here believe in it. Here are fourteen of the claims, each one set against the public record.

Silhouette of the London skyline: the Shard, Westminster, Big Ben, St Paul’s, the London Eye and the Gherkin
  • 1.1homicides per 100,000 in 2025, the lowest rate since records began
  • 97homicides in 2025, the fewest since 2014
  • −73%teenage homicide since 2021

The dossier

Fourteen claims, beside the record

Each one gives the claim as its loudest advocates actually make it, who made it, and what the record says. Some start from something real that has been stretched out of shape. Those are marked as such, because pretending otherwise would be doing the same trick back.

Claim 01Crime & knives

“London is more dangerous than New York — the murder capital.”

CBS News headline, Apr 2018, echoed widely since.

Verdict: Misleading

The record

Over the full year, New York was about twice as deadly.

Read the full recordClose

The headline came out of one month. In February 2018 London recorded 15 murders and New York 14, and that was the story. Take the whole year instead and it reverses: New York 295, London 136.

The two cities had exactly the same number of fatal stabbings that year, 76 each. New York’s overall murder rate was still roughly double. By 2025 there is no argument left in it: London is at 1.1 per 100,000 against New York’s 2.8, and about a tenth of Chicago or Philadelphia.

2018 full year
New York 295 murders, London 136. Around twice the rate.
2025
London 97 homicides, 1.1 per 100k, fewest since 2014
The trick
one month, carefully chosen, standing in for the year
Claim 02Crime & knives

“Knife crime has turned London into a war zone.”

President Trump, NRA speech, April 2018; repeated in office, 2025–26.

Verdict: True but weaponised

The record

At the peak, you were as likely to be stabbed to death in America.

Read the full recordClose

This one starts from something true. Knife offences did rise sharply through the 2010s, peaked around 2017/18, and are still a serious problem. The war zone is where it goes wrong.

In the year he said it, the American homicide rate was 5.3 per 100,000 and Britain’s was 1.8. Fatal stabbings specifically ran at almost exactly the same rate per head in both countries. Since then London’s teenage homicide has fallen 73% from its 2021 level, to eight in 2025. In the year to March 2026 knife crime in London fell 15%, and fewer people were killed with a knife in England and Wales than in any year since 1991.

2017/18
UK homicide 1.8/100k vs US 5.3/100k
Fatal stabbings
about 0.49 per 100k in both countries that year
2025
teen homicide down 73% since 2021
Year to Mar 2026
London knife crime down 15%; knife homicides in England & Wales lowest since 1991
Claim 03Crime & knives

“The streets are lawless — you’ll be robbed on sight.”

Viral “London has fallen” montages and travel-warning videos.

Verdict: True but inflated

The record

Phone theft really did surge. In 2026 it is falling fast.

Read the full recordClose

Phone snatching in central London is real. Theft from the person more than doubled between 2019 and 2025, and anyone who has had a phone taken off them outside a Tube station knows exactly how that feels. It is also theft. The videos are selling something much larger.

It is coming down, too. Between January and May 2026 phone thefts and robberies across London fell by a fifth on the same months of 2025, and by almost half in Westminster. On the measure that matters most, whether people are being killed, London is still one of the safest big cities in the rich world. The “then versus now” decline videos routinely run footage that is mislabelled, years out of date, or shot in another country altogether.

Real
theft from the person more than doubled, 2019–2025
2026
phone thefts and robberies down 20.6% Jan–May; Westminster down 45.8%
Inflated
sold as the end of civil order, not as a rise in theft
Claim 04Londonistan

“London has no-go zones where non-Muslims and police can’t enter.”

Fox News / Steven Emerson, Jan 2015. Revived by President Trump on GB News, Nov 2025.

Verdict: False (retracted)

The record

Fox issued four on-air apologies in 12 hours.

Read the full recordClose

Fox News retracted this four separate times inside twelve hours. Ofcom, the British broadcast regulator, ruled the network in breach of the code and called the segment materially misleading and a serious breach. Emerson apologised and gave money to a Birmingham charity. The Prime Minister of the day called him a complete idiot.

It has not gone away. In November 2025 President Trump told GB News there were areas of London the police won’t go near. A King’s College London survey in 2026 found a third of Britons believe the capital has Sharia no-go areas. Two-thirds of Londoners, who would know, said it doesn’t. No British no-go zone has ever been shown to exist.

Regulator
Ofcom: in breach, “materially misleading,” “serious breach”
Outcome
four on-air apologies; presenter and guest both retracted
2026
a third of Britons believe in them; two-thirds of Londoners say there are none
Claim 05Londonistan

“London wants to go to Sharia law.”

President Trump, UN General Assembly, Sept 2025, and again in the Oval Office, March 2026.

Verdict: No evidence

The record

Nobody has proposed it, and the councils that exist have no legal power.

Read the full recordClose

Fact-checkers found nothing behind it. Sharia councils have existed in Britain since the 1980s, advising Muslims on religious marriage and divorce. A 2018 Home Office review set out what they are: bodies with no legal status and no binding authority over anybody. The government’s position runs to one sentence. Sharia law forms no part of the law of England and Wales.

Nobody at City Hall has ever proposed adopting it. The Mayor called the claim Islamophobic, and the Health Secretary said the Mayor is not trying to impose Sharia law on London. Six months later, sitting beside the German Chancellor, Trump went further: “You have Shariah courts adjudicating law.” Snopes rated that false too.

Legal status
none. 2018 Home Office review; “no part of the law of England and Wales”
The claim
made from a podium, twice, with nothing offered to back it
Pattern
a years-old conspiracy theory, brought back out
Claim 06Londonistan

“The mayor said ‘learn Arabic’ · is building ‘Muslim-only homes’ · trialled Sharia in 3 boroughs.”

Recurring viral social-media posts, 2018–present.

Verdict: False (fabricated)

The record

Quotes he never said. Policies that never existed.

Read the full recordClose

Nothing here has been distorted, because there was nothing to distort. Fact-checkers have separately taken apart the learn-Arabic quote, the 40,000 Muslim-only homes, and the 2020 hoax about Sharia being trialled in three boroughs.

All three still circulate. That is the arithmetic the whole business runs on: the invention gets millions of views, the correction gets a few thousand, and nobody ever goes back to check.

“Learn Arabic”
invented; no such statement exists
“Muslim-only homes”
false; no such policy was ever proposed
“Sharia in 3 boroughs”
2020 hoax, debunked at the time
Claim 07The mayor

“The mayor called terror attacks ‘part and parcel’ of life — he doesn’t care.”

Circulated after London attacks, from 2017.

Verdict: Misleading (quote chopped)

The record

The full sentence tells you to be prepared. The clip stops halfway.

Read the full recordClose

The quote is real. The edit is what does the work. Speaking in September 2016, after a bombing in New York, the Mayor said: “Part and parcel of living in a great global city is that you have got to be prepared for these things. You’ve got to be vigilant. You’ve got to support the police.”

Whole, it is an instruction to stay alert. Halved, it becomes a shrug. The half-sentence was pulled out months later and posted again within hours of attacks it had nothing to do with. One British MP called it a disgrace, using a terrorist attack for political gain.

Full quote
“…you have got to BE PREPARED for these things”
The edit
cut off mid-sentence, which reverses it
Timing
posted again within hours of unrelated attacks
Claim 08The mayor

“The mayor is ‘a disaster’ who has ‘destroyed’ London.”

President Trump, repeatedly since 2019: “stone cold loser,” “terrible mayor,” “disaster.”

Verdict: Opinion vs record

The record

Death threats against him rose 2,000% after one American election.

Read the full recordClose

Whether Sadiq Khan is a good mayor is an argument worth having, and plenty of Londoners would say no. “Destroyed” is a different kind of claim, and it can be checked. Homicide is at a record low and tourism at a record high, and in 2026 London was ranked the world’s best city for the eleventh year running. Whatever the complaints, that is not what destruction looks like.

There is a cost to saying it from a podium. The Mayor says recorded death threats against him rose 2,000% after one US election, and doubled again after the next.

Threats
up 2,000% after one election, then doubled again, per the Mayor
Reputation
World’s Best Cities ranking: No. 1 for the 11th year running, 2026
Homicide
the lowest since records began
Claim 09Two-tier

“Two-tier policing — whites punished, minorities protected.”

Widely claimed after the 2024 riots (“Two-tier Keir”).

Verdict: False (official finding)

The record

A cross-party inquiry called it baseless and disgraceful.

Read the full recordClose

Parliament’s Home Affairs Select Committee looked into it and rejected it. The rioters were policed hard, the MPs found, because of what they did: petrol thrown at officers, buildings set alight, crowds trying to get into mosques and asylum hotels. Setting that alongside a peaceful march, the committee said, is simply wrong.

The one disparity you can actually measure runs the other way. Black people in England and Wales are stopped and searched at 24.5 per 1,000, against 5.9 per 1,000 for white people. Researchers have a name for the two-tier claim: reverse victimisation.

Inquiry
Home Affairs Committee: “baseless,” “disgraceful”
Why robust
arson, missiles, attacks on mosques and hotels, not politics
Real disparity
stop & search 24.5 vs 5.9 per 1,000 (Black vs White)
Claim 10Two-tier

“The Southport child-killer was a Muslim asylum seeker — and it was covered up.”

A fake-news site and viral posts: 27m+ impressions in days.

Verdict: False

The record

Born in Cardiff, to a family of Christian background.

Read the full recordClose

Within hours of the attack a made-up name was circulating, along with the claim that the killer was a Muslim asylum seeker. It reached tens of millions of people before anyone could correct it, and it put crowds outside mosques.

The killer was Axel Rudakubana, born in Cardiff to a family of Christian background, later jailed for a minimum of 52 years. Police could not release details without risking the trial, and the silence got filled. People still argue that the reporting rules caused the riots. The lie caused the riots.

The truth
Axel Rudakubana, born in Cardiff, jailed 52 years minimum
The lie
an invented “asylum seeker” identity, 27m+ impressions
Consequence
a rumour that was never true set off nationwide riots
Claim 11Replacement

“London went from 86% white to 36% in ten years.”

Viral posts across social platforms.

Verdict: False

The record

London was 54% white in 2021. It was never 86%.

Read the full recordClose

At the 2021 census, 53.8% of Londoners identified as white: 36.8% White British and 17% White Other. Ten years earlier the figure was 59.8%.

The 86% never existed. London was 79.8% white in 1991 and 71.2% in 2001, a change spread over thirty years rather than ten. And the 36% is the White British figure on its own, quoted as though it were the whole white population. Both ends of the comparison have been swapped for something else.

2021
53.8% white (36.8% White British + 17% White Other)
The “86%”
invented. It was 79.8% in 1991 and 71.2% in 2001
The trick
one sub-group quoted as the whole
Claim 12Replacement

“London is ‘no longer British’ — minority-white means replacement.”

“Minority white cities”: a recurring line in British politics.

Verdict: True but weaponised

The record

Minority White British, in a city that has taken people in for centuries.

Read the full recordClose

The underlying fact holds. White British people became a minority of London’s population at the 2011 census, and the share has fallen since. The phrase used to describe it does not hold. London is minority White British, which is a different statement from minority white.

What the replacement framing adds is intent. London’s foreign-born share went from 21.7% in 1991 to 40.7% in 2021, which continues something the city has been doing since the Huguenots got off the boat. Around 80% of Londoners still report a UK national identity. Demographers put the change down to ageing, birth rates, migration, changes to the census categories themselves, and people describing themselves differently from how their parents did. None of that needs a plan behind it.

Accurate
White British Londoners became a minority in 2011
Inaccurate
“minority white.” It is minority White British
Context
foreign-born 21.7% to 40.7%, 1991–2021; ~80% hold UK identity
Claim 13Control grid

“‘15-minute cities’ are climate lockdowns to trap you in your zone.”

From the Oxford protests, 2023 (“break ULEZ and break the mayor”).

Verdict: Conspiracy theory

The record

No wall, no permit, nobody locked into a zone.

Read the full recordClose

The term was coined by the urbanist Carlos Moreno in 2015. It means putting the shops, the school and the doctor within a short walk or cycle of where people live. That is the whole idea. There is nothing in it about stopping anyone going anywhere.

The conspiracy version welded it onto a separate Oxford traffic-filter scheme. Both councils said publicly in 2022 that nobody was going to be confined to anything, and fact-checkers around the world have said it since. What the theory has actually produced is a steady flow of abuse and death threats to local councillors, over a traffic plan.

The concept
shops and services within a short walk; no limits on movement
The confusion
merged with Oxford traffic filters; councils denied it in 2022
The harm
death threats to councillors over a traffic scheme
Claim 14Control grid

“ULEZ cameras are a mass-surveillance control grid.”

Anti-ULEZ campaigning, folded into the “climate lockdown” story.

Verdict: Distorted

The record

A charge on the dirtiest vehicles, read off a number plate.

Read the full recordClose

The Ultra Low Emission Zone charges the most polluting vehicles a daily fee. The cameras read number plates to work out who owes it, which is what a toll road does. Nobody is tracked, and nobody is stopped from driving anywhere.

Air pollution in London has been linked to thousands of early deaths a year, which is the reason the charge exists. Whether drivers should have to pay it is a legitimate argument, and people lose real money over it. Calling it a surveillance grid is where the argument stops being honest.

What it is
a daily charge on high-emission vehicles, billed by plate
What it isn’t
a system that tracks anyone or limits where they go
The stakes
London air pollution linked to thousands of early deaths a year

The number behind claim 01

The chart nobody prints next to the headline

“More dangerous than New York” is the claim everything else rests on. Here is how the homicide rates actually compare, using the figures the Met and City Hall published in January 2026.

Homicides per 100,000 peopleLondon 2025 vs. comparable world cities · lower is safer
London 20251.1
Milan1.6
Toronto1.6
New York2.8
Berlin3.2
Los Angeles5.6
Houston10.5
Chicago11.7
Philadelphia12.3

London recorded 97 homicides in 2025, its fewest since 2014, in a city that added more than half a million people over the same decade. That works out at 1.1 per 100,000: below New York, Berlin, Toronto and Milan, and nowhere near the American cities that never make it into the comparison. Teenage homicide is down 73% on 2021. Eight young people were killed last year, which is eight too many and a long way from a war zone.

The mechanism

How it gets made

Most of these stories don’t start out as lies. They start as something small and true: one statistic, one real incident. Then they go round a loop, and each time round a bit more of the context falls off.

  1. 1

    One number, one incident

Someone lifts a single figure, or a single crime, out of everything around it and posts it as proof of decline.

a single month’s crime stat · one viral clip

  2. 2

    Repackaged and pushed

Partisan outlets and big accounts wrap it in a culture-war frame and put it in front of audiences of millions.

tabloid front pages · broadcasters · influencers

  3. 3

    Sold back as settled fact

By the time it comes back round it is common knowledge. Everyone knows London has fallen. Nobody can say any more where they first heard it.

“even they admit it” · repeat

Then round again, a little further from the source each time.

The counter-record

The year London supposedly fell

If London were the frightened, failing city of the story, somebody would have to account for the rest of it. This is the same stretch of time, on the record.

A note on method

This site argues a case. It is not neutral and doesn’t pretend to be. What it does is take each claim as its loudest advocates actually make it and check it against published data. Some things in here are true and are said so: knife offences did rise sharply in the late 2010s, phone theft really did surge, and the White British share of London did fall below half. Leaving those out would make the rest easier to write and much easier to dismiss. Figures are current to the dates shown and will move; the datasets are public and updated, so check them yourself.
